Hey there, future IAS officer! If you’re reading this, chances are you’ve already heard about the CSAT (Civil Services Aptitude Test) and are probably wondering how to approach it. Well, don’t worry, you’re not alone. Many UPSC aspirants have the same question: What books should I pick up for CSAT?
Let’s dive right in, and I’ll give you the lowdown on the best CSAT books for UPSC, along with some tips on how to make your preparation journey smooth and stress-free. Trust me, I’ve been there, and I get how overwhelming it can feel!
What Exactly is CSAT?
First things first, let's clarify what CSAT is all about. It’s the General Studies Paper II in the UPSC Prelims exam. Unlike other papers, CSAT is qualifying — meaning, you don’t need to score super high to pass, but you do need to clear the minimum cut-off (which is around 33% of the total marks). If you don’t clear it, well, the UPSC Mains remains a distant dream.
The CSAT exam covers four main areas:
- Comprehension (understanding short passages and answering questions)
- Logical Reasoning (puzzles, series, analogy, etc.)
- Decision-Making (testing your ability to make decisions in a given scenario)
- Basic Arithmetic and Data Interpretation (simple math, graphs, tables, etc.)
