Many UPSC aspirants aiming to join the Indian Police Service (IPS) wonder if swimming is a compulsory skill for the training process. While it’s important to be physically fit for IPS, swimming is not a mandatory requirement for selection into the IPS during the UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE). However, it does play a role in the later stages of training, where candidates are trained in various physical activities, including swimming.
In this blog, we’ll clear up the confusion around swimming and IPS training, and also touch upon how the best IAS coaching in Delhi can help you prepare for the UPSC exam, ensuring you have a solid foundation before moving on to physical training.
Becoming an IPS officer involves more than just clearing the UPSC exam; you also need to meet specific physical fitness standards. While the UPSC does not test your swimming skills, you must clear a medical and fitness test, which includes:
Minimum height: 165 cm for males and 150 cm for females (with some relaxations for certain categories).
Chest expansion of 5 cm.
Vision standards, including a particular requirement for corrected vision (with spectacles or lenses).
General fitness, including cardiovascular endurance.
Once you clear the UPSC exam and choose IPS as your service, you will undergo rigorous training at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA) in Hyderabad. Here, swimming is introduced as part of physical conditioning. While it’s encouraged, it’s not mandatory for passing the training. The idea is to expose trainees to multiple physical activities, such as horse riding, running, endurance tests, and of course, swimming.
If you don’t know how to swim, don’t worry. Training will be provided at SVPNPA, and you will be given time to learn. The academy is equipped with professional trainers who ensure that trainees pick up these life skills during the training period.
While thinking about physical training and skills like swimming is important, the priority for aspirants should be the UPSC preparation itself. IPS is one of the most sought-after services under UPSC, and cracking the exam requires a strong study plan, strategic coaching, and perseverance.
