Civil Service may be categorised into three-:
• All India Service (Group A)
• Central Service (Group A)
• Central Service (Group B)
Group A officer is appointed by the president of India and appointments to Group B officers are made by the authorities specified by a general or special order by the president of India
All India Services are those services which are common to union and state government. Presently there are three all India Services, IAS, IPS, IFS.
Central government may make rule for regulation recruitment and condition of service of members of All India Service.
Under Article 312, if Rajya Sabha passes resolution by 2/3 majority then union parliament can make law for the creation of new All India Services.
Gazette officers are those officers whose recruitment, emoluments, position, promotion are notified by the Gazatte of India. Gazatted officers has personal authority to issue an official stamp on the half of the government. Group A and Group B are categorised into Gazatted officers.
Non Gazatted officers are those officers whose recruitments, appointments, position, promotion are not notified by the Gazatte of India. They have not personal authority to issue an official stamp on behalf of the government. Their salary prestige is low rather than Gazatted officer. Group C and Group D officials are categorised into Non Gazatted officers.
As an IPS officer you may allotted to a state police department or to the central police department.
At the state level, you move from being Assistant Commissioner to Deputy Commissioner to Additional Commissioner to Joint Commissioner to Special Commissioner.
At the centre, you will move from being Additional Superintendent to Superintendant, Senior Superintendant, Deputy Inspector General, Inspector General, Additional Director General to Director General.
